Sybbyl sought out Bruhamoff in the dining room, waiting for him by drinking cups of tea as others came and went to eat. She knew it was one place he was certain to go to. When he entered the room carrying a bowl and a large sandwich, she hurried to where he was about to sit at one of the long tables.

“Brother Bruhamoff, may I join you?”

He sat, refusing to look at her. “I cannot prevent you from doing so.”

“Please. I ask only that I may speak to you and try to explain.” Curious heads turned slightly in their direction. There wasn’t any way their conversation could be kept confidential. She sat across from him.

Bruhamoff began to eat, looking past her.

“I wouldn’t have put the poison in your drink, Brother Bruhamoff. I was sent to spy, that is true. I was also told to make friends with you, but I found it easy to like you, and I truly care about your wellbeing. I regret any hurt I’ve caused you and wish I could prove my sincerity. Is there anything I can do that will make you believe I care for you very much? Soon I’ll be banished from here, and I only want you not to think badly of me.”

He glanced at her, unable to miss seeing the wetness around her eyes, she was sure. He continued to eat.

Slowly she stood. “Thank you, Brother Bruhamoff, for listening to me.” She turned to walk away.

“I forgive you.”

She stopped, quickly looking back at him.

He spoke as he looked at her. “I’m leaving tomorrow morning. I don’t want to leave you upset. Peace be with you, Sister Sybbyl.”

“And with you, Brother Bruhamoff.” She walked away, wiping her eyes.
